Frankincense Spotlight

Frankincense is often called the "King of Oils." But where does it actually come from❓

Frankincense essential oil is distilled from the resin of Boswellia trees that grow in dry, rugged regions of the world. What many people don't realize is that there isn't just one type of Frankincense tree. Several different species produce resin, each growing best in slightly different environments.

dōTERRA Frankincense is a proprietary blend sourced from four Boswellia species:
  • Boswellia carterii
  • Boswellia sacra
  • Boswellia frereana
  • Boswellia papyrifera
Because each species thrives in different conditions, the resin is harvested from several regions, including Oman, Somaliland, and Ethiopia, where these trees naturally grow.

Through Cō-Impact Sourcing, dōTERRA works directly with harvesters and sorting communities rather than relying on multiple layers of middlemen. This helps provide more reliable income, fair compensation, and greater economic stability for the people who collect the resin.

At the same time, sustainability efforts are in place to help protect the trees themselves. Frankincense has been harvested for thousands of years, and responsible practices help ensure these trees and their ecosystems can continue to thrive for generations.

There's a reason people often say, "When in doubt, use Frankincense." Its versatility makes it one of the most loved oils in many homes.
